The Konmari method

Marie Kondo’s findings from her many years of researching tidying are outlined in her first book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying up. She has sold 9 million copies of it.

Kondo’s mission is to “tidy your space, transform your life” for people to live happier lives.

Hence she has developed a certification program so consultants around the world can help spread her mission.

Clarity took part in the first international seminar in New York in August 2016, and are now Gold level consultants of the method (more than 2,000 hours of decluttering).

Here are the method’s principles:

Tidy in one “tidying marathon” (versus little by little) this way you can dramatically change your mindset.

  • You decide what to keep, not what to get rid of. It is all about the mindset.
  • You keep only what sparks joy.
  • You tidy by category, not by room…
  • Tidy in this specific order: clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous) and sentimental items.

These principles are “simple” but not easy to apply.

A decluttering “à la Marie Kondo” is a truly deep self-discovery. It consists of taking each and every object we own, holding it in our hands, and asking if it still has a place in my life. Today.

Doing a Home Detox often means that you are going to take a trip down memory lane, or uncover something carefully hidden in back of a drawer… this often uncovers both physical objects as well as emotions.

During our consultancy work, Clarity is often told that prior to being guided, people felt like their decluttering was insurmountable. Clarity’s consultants are like high altitude guides. They help you take action, set your objectives, sort your possessions, and share their expertise for home organization. Most importantly, they give you the tools to maintain the order and grace you have found in your home.

“Clarity has blown me away. The passion and enthusiasm Eliette and Marieke bring to their business has no equal. They are two infectious ladies and I was stunned with what respect they touched my belongings even those that were going to be discarded. They made me look and touch the items and think about them. Clarity listens actively and asks questions, they give options and I am not able to say which room of my apartment is my preferred room. When the living room was finished I was in awe of my bookshelves and the way my favorite books were displayed. Every room is clear of clutter, every room speaks to me, every room is a room that has a personality not clutter, every object has an allocated place and three days after the project ended I am enjoying myself more and more in my ‘new’ home and yet nothing is new. What is also incredible is the impact the work of Clarity has. My desk at work is admired by colleagues about how neat and tidy it is, and the way the objects are arranged.”
